Back in 2004, an Australian woman underwent a totally unavoidable mid-life crisis. The children had grown up and no longer needed her. Her business was successful. What else was there to do? So she visited East Bali for a holiday and resolution to her problem.

Struck by this intensely beautiful and spiritual area, she decided to build a home there. As “giving back” was very much a part of her life journey, proceeds from the rent from the original villa were donated to the East Bali Poverty Project. Currently funds from this villa are being used by the founder of EBPP to produce a documentary on the changes made possible to thousands of Balinese in the ten years since his aid project was initiated.

A second villa was needed as rental demand grew. Rumah Kecil, quite literally “Little House” was constructed. By now, the woman had moved into a larger arena for gifting, and was travelling as an advocate for Habitat for Humanity in the Asia Pacific area.

News of the villas, and the principle behind the concept, spread. Three like-minded local ex-pats got together, and Dua Gils was born. It provides as a smaller investment for them, and a much needed alternative to couples travelling who did not require an entire villa. The Dua Gils complex also includes a restaurant, and a small spa area. These ex-pats work at a much more local level, teaching English, fundraising for a new floor for the local school, and donating their time to working with children at the local ashram.

With rampant over-development of this beautiful island, an East Bali Villa is one place you can stay knowing that your vacation is being put to good use. It is helping others. In more ways, and places, than you can ever imagine.
